Arthur Kleinjan studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam and the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
He lives and works in Rotterdam. His work has been exhibited internationally, including solo exhibitions at The Essl Collection(Vienna, Austria), Western Front(Vancouver, Canada) and 2YK Gallery(Berlin, Germany). He has participated in exhibitions such as the Biennale of Busan (South Korea), in the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (Canada), as well as exhibitions in France, Denmark, Spain, Italy, China and the USA.

In 2021 he won the Aesthetica Art Prize, UK

In Arthur Kleinjan’s video work and photography, a fascinating exploration of visual perception is merged with a metaphysical sensation of place, identity and time as he transforms apparent lucid moments into something complex and evocative.

Eine Ausstellung von „The Wapping Project„, London:

A Beauty Odyssey vereint Foto- und Filmarbeiten von drei Künstlerinnen – Elina Brotherus, Marta Michalowska und Rosaliina Paavilainen. Die Ausstellung umfasst zwei Werke von Elina und Marta, die während ihrer jüngsten Reise in den Oman entstanden sind, wo sie in monumentalen Gebirgslandschaften, die sowohl ehrfurchtgebietend als auch beunruhigend, fremd und vertraut, ungerührt und doch von alten und zeitgenössischen menschlichen Kulturen geprägt sind, fotografierten und in den Bildern der jeweils anderen auftraten. Rosaliina präsentiert ihren gleichzeitig verspielten und beunruhigenden Kurzfilm, der der Ausstellung den Titel A Beauty Odyssey gibt. Der im Jahr 2024 fertiggestellte Film zeigt die Brutalität von Schönheitsritualen, die den Körper der Protagonistin gewaltsam formen und von der Künstlerin durchgeführt werden, um ihr jugendliches Aussehen in der Zeit einzufrieren.

A Beauty Odyssey brings together works in photography and film by three artists – Elina Brotherus, Marta Michalowska and Rosaliina Paavilainen. The exhibition includes two bodies of work by Elina and Marta made during their recent trip to Oman, where they photographed and performed in each other’s images set within monumental mountainous landscapes both awe-inspiring and troubling, alien and familiar, unmoved yet shaped by human cultures ancient and contemporary. While Rosaliina presents her simultaneously playful and unsettling short film that lends the exhibition its title – A Beauty Odyssey. Completed in 2024, the film looks at the brutality of beauty rituals violently shaping the body of the protagonist, performed by the artist, to freeze in time her youthful appearance.
